About

Bill is here to share the decades of experience

Bill Fulton is one of the USA's most important thought leaders on cities and urban planning and the founder of the "Future Of Where" brand, including the Future Of Where Substack newsletter and podcast. He is currently a Professor of Practice in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning and the Design lab at UC San Diego and a sought-after speaker and consultant on issues related to cities and urban planning.

Bill grew up with a deep sense of "place" in the small factory city of Auburn, New York, an experience that he recounted in his book Place and Prosperity.

He decided to create the Future Of Where during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it became clear that the future of place and proximity was going to be different than it had been in the past. The Future Of Where explores how COVID changed our relationship to "where" and how that is likely to evolve.

Bill has spent most of his adult life in California and Texas. In California, he served as Mayor of the City of Ventura and Director of Planning and Economic Development for the City of San Diego. In Texas, he was Director of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University in Houston.

In addition to his other roles, Bill is the longtime editor and publisher of California Planning & Development Report, the state's most authoritative source about urban planning, where he also teaches courses available to urban planners for "Certification Maintenance" continuing education credit. He also serves as a Senior Advisor to PFM Consulting Group, which provides consulting services to local, regional, and state governments across the United States.

Bill and his wife Natalie live in Downtown San Diego, California.
